Exactly What to Do If You’re Waitlisted From Your Dream School

If you have been waitlisted from your dream school, this is not the moment to spiral, repeatedly email admissions, or sit around hoping for good news. A waitlist is a conditional opportunity. How you handle the next few weeks matters more than most people realize.

Here’s exactly what to do next:

  1. Immediate Actions

If this school is truly your top choice, accept the waitlist spot immediately.

Admissions offices track engagement. Delaying sends the wrong signal.

If it’s not your top choice, withdraw from the waitlist. There is no upside to staying on a waitlist you would not actually accept.

And here’s the part people hate hearing, but it’s non-negotiable:

You MUST deposit at a backup school by May 1st.

Waitlist offers often come late, sometimes in June, July, or even August. Hope is not a plan. Fully embrace attending a college you were accepted to, pay your deposit, and plan to attend so you are prepared both practically and emotionally, if you are not offered a spot off the waitlist.

  1. Follow Instructions (This Is Critical)

Before you send anything, read the waitlist email carefully.

If they ask for updates, send only what they request. If they don’t ask for extra materials, don’t send them anyway.

Unsolicited recommendations, portfolios, or repeated emails don’t make you look eager. They make you look like you can’t follow directions. That can hurt you.

  1. What to Send: Your Letter of Continued Interest (Before May 1st)

If the school allows it, you need a Letter of Continued Interest (LOCI). This is not a love letter. It’s a strategic update.

Your LOCI should:

  • Be addressed to your regional admissions officer

  • Clearly reaffirm that this school is your top choice

  • Show specific fit (programs, opportunities, academic reasons)

  • Include new achievements, leadership, awards, or improved grades

  • Explicitly state: “I will enroll if admitted.”

  • Stay short, polite, and professional

  1. While You Wait (Spring → Summer)

Finish senior year strong. Yes, grades still matter, even after you have been admitted elsewhere.

Stay engaged, but respectfully. One strong LOCI is better than five unnecessary emails.

And this part is important: Mentally commit to your backup school.

Do not put your life on hold. Do not spend months refreshing your inbox. You should make plans and get excited, which will help you handle any outcome with clarity.

The Truth About Waitlists

The truth is that a waitlist is unpredictable and requires you to adjust your expectations along the way. But if you remain calm, strategic, and prepared, you will put yourself in the best position for acceptance.

Hope alone won’t get you off the waitlist, but smart execution of this plan just might.
