Every admissions cycle seems to produce a new buzzword. This year, that word is authenticity.
As artificial intelligence tools become more common and application numbers continue to rise, admissions officers are increasingly focused on identifying genuine student voices.
Why Authenticity Matters More Than Ever
Admissions offices read thousands of applications every year. Strong grades and rigorous coursework remain important, but many applicants look similar on paper. What differentiates students is often their ability to communicate who they are, what they care about, and how they engage with the world.
That is why essays, activity descriptions, and supplemental responses continue to play a significant role in a holistic admissions review.
The Problem with "Perfect" Applications
Students often believe they need to appear flawless, but the reality is much different.
Admissions officers consistently report that they are looking for students who demonstrate curiosity, initiative, resilience, and self-awareness. Those qualities can emerge from everyday experiences just as easily as major accomplishments.
The AI Question
One of the most discussed topics in admissions today is the use of AI in essay writing.
Most colleges are not impressed by essays that sound polished but generic, lacking personal voice and detail. Admissions readers are becoming increasingly skilled at identifying essays that feel manufactured. Here at Essential College Coaches, we read AI essays every day and our response is always the same. Give us your authentic writing, answer the questions your draft uncovers, and you will have a far more compelling piece of writing for admissions. When they finish reading your application, they will easily picture you thriving on campus. No AI Bot will know your stories, the way you do.
What Authenticity should include on your Application
Don’t just make a broad claim. Show me how you have been hardworking or diligent (or pick your quality) with examples and stories. Show always beats Tell.
Be honest in your telling and reflection, our values and experiences happen over time. College Admissions hates the “and in that moment I suddenly know…” It always feels false.
Show Admissions your personal values by describing what you have done, been part of, or pursued outside of the classroom during your high school years.
Then show them with clear evidence how you have grown, what you have learned and how that is informing your future academic and other goals you will pursue in college. This piece is critical and the one most often missed by students.
The strongest applications are rarely the most dramatic, but they are genuine and include well told stories that illustrate the qualities that make you unique.
